So I’ve joined two more blog circles. I like the accountability, inspiration, and different interpretations of storytelling that these circles bring. Today I’ll be sharing the first installment of “Documenting Our Days”, a blog circle in which storytelling photographers from all over the world tell the story of their lives from at a particular time of day. This one happens to be breakfast time.

Breakfast time is a calm and simple time in our house. Bennett and I enjoy our mornings together. I sip coffee and have a smoothie or some cereal while he chows on his yogurt and fruit and whatever else we can find. Sometimes we video chat with Nana and Papa while we eat. This day was one of many where Bennett let me know in no uncertain terms that he could do it himself. He was so quick to discard the spoon (which he loves) and get after that yogurt in his own way that I actually missed shooting the beginning of breakfast while I was pouring my coffee! I’m going to challenge myself to shoot breakfast time again…in a way that tells a more complete version of our story. But for now, Documenting Our Days | Breakfast time.

These are college buddies. Like drinking buddies from back in the day. Like potential to tell embarrassing stories about each other kind of buddies…So it was a little surreal when we finally got to meet up with our kiddos and catch up! Little lady is already 9 months old. I’m not really sure how we managed to wait that long before seeing each other, but during our last encounter I had a 4 month old. It’s crazy how fast time goes when you’ve got little ones!

It was so much fun to spend time with you three. I love seeing you as “grown ups” (notice the quotation marks :)) now and such a sweet little family you are. I promise not to wait another year to meet up! See you soon!

Stories in Seven is a blog circle made up of documentary family photographers who have committed to telling a story in 7 images on the 7th of each month. This is the story of a backpack hike.

I clearly remember hiking and exploring nature with my dad. He’d point things out to us constantly: bugs, different plants, animal tracks. I take on that role now with Bennett and I enjoy every minute. Today we took him out to test his new backpack carrier on a short hike at Discovery Park. It was so much fun to watch him looking around and taking in everything. “Tee, tee!” (Tree.) We showed him a butterfly. He found a stick and a leaf. He fell down multiple times and his time walking by himself was short (cute little scuffed knee…), but he seemed to love being in the backpack so close to his daddy almost as much as exploring on his own. I look forward to many more adventures in the great outdoors with my little family and I’ll cherish these images of one of Bennett’s very first hikes.

I’ve known Courtney for 20 years…seriously? 20 years?!! How is that even possible?! I am not old enough to have known someone for 20 years. But if I were, we would’ve met at the beginning of high school. A few years ago I shot her engagement photos, and then her wedding…and it was so special that I got to photograph her with her little girl. Life sure changes. Look at what a doll Miss Brooklynn is! And her mama couldn’t love her any more. I can’t wait to see them both again soon!

A few weeks ago, I was honored to get to spend the weekend mentoring Krystal in all things Day in the Life photography. We even got to spend the afternoon photographing one of my favorite families (the family who were my guinea pigs for my very first Day in the Life ever in 2013!), the Halters. We didn’t shoot at my typical Day in the Life times (first thing in the morning or afternoon until bedtime), so we caught a different look into their lives. Playing at home, and an afternoon at a local brewery (where there happened to be face painting and ice cream!)…this is how my family spends our weekends too! Thanks for having me, yet again, Halters!!
